The Irony of the Oracle

Bernie lived in a basement apartment in Queens that smelled of old cabbage and desperation. His walls were covered in red string, Maya calendars, and printouts of atmospheric data. For twenty years, Bernie had been the world's most dedicated doomsday prophet. He had predicted the end of the world fourteen times, and each time, he had been mocked by his neighbors and ignored by the scientific community.

"It's the Maya, you idiots!" he would scream at the mailman. "The cycle is closing! The earth is going to swallow us whole!"

Bernie didn't just predict the end; he prepared for it. He had a stockpile of canned peaches, three gallons of distilled water, and a hand-cranked radio that only picked up static. He had spent his entire life savings on a "survivalist's bunker" that was actually just a reinforced laundry room.

The irony of Bernie's life was that he was actually right. The Maya calculations were precise. The tectonic shift was inevitable. The world was indeed scheduled to end on December 21st at exactly 12:00 PM.

On the morning of the 21st, Bernie was in a state of religious ecstasy. He woke up at 4:00 AM, put on his "Apocalypse Vest" (which had twenty-four pockets for various tools), and began his final countdown.

"This is it!" he shouted to his empty room. "The great reckoning! The cleansing of the earth!"

He spent the next few hours in a frenzy of activity. He checked his canned peaches. He tuned his radio. He wrote a final, triumphant letter to the local newspaper, titled *I TOLD YOU SO*.

At 11:50 AM, Bernie decided he needed one last thing for his final moments: a piece of toasted rye bread. He plugged in his ancient, flickering toaster—a relic from the 1970s that sparked every time it was used.

As he waited for the toast to pop, Bernie stared at the clock. 11:55. 11:56. 11:57.

He could almost feel the ground beginning to tremble. He could almost see the oceans rising to reclaim the streets of Queens. He felt a surge of vindication. He was the only man in the city who was ready. He was the only one who had seen the truth.

At 11:59 and 45 seconds, the toaster sparked. A single, violent surge of electricity jumped from the heating element to the metal casing, and then, through Bernie's wet hand, straight to his heart.

Bernie died instantly. He fell backward, his "Apocalypse Vest" clattering against the floor, his eyes wide in a permanent expression of shock.

Five seconds later, the ground actually did shake. A massive tectonic rift opened up exactly where his apartment building stood. The entire block was swallowed by the earth in a single, thunderous gulp.

Bernie had spent his entire life predicting the end of the world, only to be killed by a piece of cheap kitchenware five seconds before the world actually ended.
