The Orphan of White Orchids

The Mississippi delta in April is not a place but a confession. It admits everything—the rot in the walls, the river in the basement, the fact that the people who built this place on cotton and blood and other people's labour knew what they were doing and did it anyway, because that is what humans do when they want something more than they fear it. Elias Thorn stood in the parlor of the cotton trader's house in Vicksburg, a room that smelled of camphor and lemon oil and the particular stale sweetness of a house where nothing new had happened in thirty years. He was thirty years old, from Chicago, and he had come to the delta with a letter of introduction from the university and a conviction that the Mississippi basin still harbored botanical species unknown to science.
