The Rotting Manor

The Blackwood Estate did not sit upon the land; it seemed to be sinking into it, a skeletal ruin of white columns and weeping willows. The air was thick with the scent of jasmine and decay, a cloying sweetness that masked the smell of the swamp. Elias returned to the manor not as a son, but as a ghost, the last heir to a bloodline that had spent two centuries obsessing over its own purity.

The "Academy" of Blackwood was a family tradition, a rigorous study of genealogy and the "hidden rhythms" of the soil. The Elders—his uncles and cousins who had never left the estate—lived in the attic and the cellars, their bodies twisted and pale, their minds lost in the archives of their ancestors.

"You must merge, Elias," his Uncle Silas whispered, his voice sounding like dry leaves scraping on stone. Silas had spent forty years studying the manor's blueprints, and now his skin seemed to have the same texture as the peeling wallpaper. "The blood is thinning. The house is hungry. To save the lineage, you must become part of the architecture."

Elias had spent his youth fleeing the manor, trying to build a life in the city. But the pull of Blackwood was a physical force, a psychic tether that dragged him back. He found himself drawn to the archives, reading the journals of ancestors who had described the same sensation—the feeling that the house was not a building, but a living organism that required a human consciousness to maintain its structure.

He began to notice the changes. A pattern in the wood grain that looked like a screaming face. A hallway that grew longer every time he walked it. The feeling of invisible hands brushing against his neck in the dead of night.

The "preservation" the Elders spoke of was not about saving the family's honor, but about preventing the manor from collapsing into the swamp. The house required a "Core"—a living mind to act as its anchor.

One humid August night, during a storm that turned the sky the color of a bruise, Silas led Elias to the cellar. In the center of the room was a chair made of living roots and ancient iron.

"The previous Core is fading," Silas said, pointing to a shriveled husk of a man fused into the wall, his eyes still blinking slowly. "The house is shaking, Elias. If you don't take the seat, the Blackwood name ends tonight."

Elias looked at the husk, then at the decaying splendor of the manor. He realized that the "nobility" of his bloodline was just a fancy word for a hereditary madness. They weren't guardians of a legacy; they were prisoners of a parasite.

But as the house groaned and a crack split the ceiling above them, Elias felt a sudden, terrifying surge of belonging. He didn't want to be alone in the world. He didn't want to be the last of anything.

He sat in the chair.

He felt the roots pierce his skin, the iron bind his wrists, and the consciousness of a hundred dead ancestors flood into his mind. He felt the house stop shaking. He felt the walls stabilize.

He was finally home. And as the roots began to grow over his eyes, Elias smiled, knowing that he would never have to leave again.
