(Tragic Romance - T10-02)

The streets of Paris in 1793 smelled of iron and ozone. Julian stood on the balcony of the National Convention, looking out at a sea of faces that wanted blood. He had been the golden boy of the Revolution, the orator who had promised a world of Reason and Virtue.

But Reason had turned into a monster. The Guillotine, the "National Razor," was now the only law.

Beside him stood Elodie, the woman he had loved since they were children in the provinces. She was the only person who knew that Julian's public confidence was a mask for a growing horror.

"The Terror cannot stop," Julian whispered, his voice trembling. "Robespierre has created a loop. The only way to prove one's virtue is to accuse others of vice. If I stop it now, they will turn on the innocent. The cycle will only accelerate."

Elodie took his hand. Her touch was the only thing that felt real in a world of slogans and screams. "Then break the loop, Julian. Not with a speech, but with a sacrifice."

Julian realized the geometry of the situation. The people didn't want justice; they wanted a focal point for their rage. They needed a villain to hate so they could stop hating each other.

For the next month, Julian began a systematic campaign of self-destruction. He made public blunders. He insulted the most dangerous men in the Convention. He staged a "conspiracy" that was so obvious it was almost comical. He turned himself from the hero of the people into the most hated man in France.

He did it all while holding Elodie in the shadows, ensuring she was safe, ensuring she was seen as the victim of his "madness."

The day of his trial was a carnival of hate. The crowd roared for his head. Julian stood in the dock, looking at the faces of the people he had tried to save. He felt a strange, soaring peace. He had successfully shifted the tensor of the city's rage from the innocent to himself.

As he climbed the steps to the scaffold, he caught Elodie's eye in the crowd. She was weeping, but she nodded.

The blade fell.

In the silence that followed, the fever of the Terror broke. The people, having consumed the "Greatest Traitor," suddenly found themselves exhausted. The loop was broken.

Julian died as a villain in the history books, but as he closed his eyes, he felt the warmth of Elodie's love, a singular, enduring truth in a world of lies.
