The Bureaucracy of Disappearance

Harold lived in a world of triplicate forms and beige corridors. As a senior auditor for the Department of Urban Coordination, his life was a masterpiece of mediocrity. Then he was fired for "excessive attention to detail," a crime in a department that thrived on vagueness.

His obsession began with George. George had been a mid-level clerk in the Filing Division who had vanished during a mandatory team-building retreat in the Poconos. The official report stated that George had "voluntarily transitioned to a private sector role," but there was no record of where he had gone, and his pension had been frozen.

For five years, Harold conducted a rogue audit of George's existence. He tracked missing staples, mismatched timestamps, and anomalous coffee breaks. He built a conspiracy map that would have made a madman blush, involving secret budgets, hidden basements, and a mysterious "Committee of Continuity."

He spent his life savings on private investigators and bribes, convinced that George was a political prisoner in a shadow war. He imagined George being tortured for secrets, or perhaps leading a double life as a sleeper agent.

Finally, after a decade of searching, Harold found a lead. He tracked a series of encrypted emails to a small, unremarkable cottage in Vermont. He broke in at midnight, heart pounding, expecting to find a torture chamber or a command center.

He found George.

George was sitting in a recliner, eating a bowl of cereal and watching a documentary about fungi. He looked healthy, happy, and profoundly confused.

"Harold?" George asked. "What are you doing in my house?"

"Where have you been for ten years?" Harold screamed. "Who kidnapped you? What was the conspiracy?"

George blinked. "Kidnapped? Harold, I got lost on the way back from the retreat. I wandered into a different town, met a lovely woman, and realized I hated the Department so much that I just... didn't go back. I tried to call, but I lost my phone in a creek, and I figured since nobody called me for a month, they probably didn't miss me."

Harold stared at him. Ten years of investigation. Thousands of dollars. A ruined career. All because George was just a bit directionally challenged and the Department was too lazy to check if he was actually dead.

Harold sat down on the floor and started to laugh. It was a high, thin sound that didn't stop for a long time.
