Variant 001: The Concrete Jungle's Secret

The rain in New York didn't wash anything away; it just turned the grime into a slick, black mirror. I sat in my office, the kind of place where the dust had its own zip code, staring at a photograph of a white tiger. Not a real one—a genetically spliced monstrosity from the labs of the Sterling Corporation.

They called it 'Project Aeon'. I called it a payday.

My client was a kid named Leo, a disgraced scion of the Sterling empire. He'd walked away from the silver spoon, choosing instead to live in the gutters of the Lower East Side. He didn't want his father's money; he wanted the tiger. He'd spent three years planning the heist, using a series of improvised traps and a deep knowledge of the facility's ventilation shafts. He'd caught the beast not with a cage, but with a promise of freedom.

But in this city, freedom is just another word for 'unprotected'.

Leo and I had a deal. I provided the intel on the Sterling security rotations, and he provided the muscle—or rather, the claws. We spent months in the shadows, training the beast in the abandoned warehouses of Brooklyn. The tiger, whom he called Ash, wasn't just a weapon; it was the only thing in Leo's life that didn't have a price tag.

Then came the night of the Great Purge. Sterling didn't just want their asset back; they wanted to erase every witness.

The ambush happened at the docks. The air was thick with the smell of salt and ozone. Sterling's 'cleaners' arrived in black sedans, their silencers coughing in the dark. Leo fought like a man possessed, his bond with Ash creating a synergy that defied logic. The tiger was a blur of white fur and crimson teeth, a storm of violence that tore through the corporate mercenaries.

But the cost of victory is always paid in blood.

During the chaos, a stray bullet caught Ash in the flank. It wasn't a killing blow, but it was enough to slow him down. Leo didn't hesitate. He threw himself in front of the beast, taking a round to the shoulder to shield his partner.

As the last of the mercenaries fell, Leo leaned against a rusted shipping container, clutching his wound. He looked at Ash, the tiger's golden eyes reflecting the distant neon lights of the city.

"We're out, buddy," Leo whispered, his voice raspy. "No more cages."

I watched them walk away into the fog—a broken boy and a wounded monster, two outcasts who had found the only kind of loyalty that matters in a city built on betrayal. I didn't follow them. Some stories are better left without an ending.
