## The Geometry of Absence

Marc lived his life in the margins of other people's stories. As an archivist in a quiet corner of the Bibliothèque Nationale, he spent his days organizing the remnants of dead men's thoughts. He liked the silence; it was a predictable, honest thing.

Sophie had been the only noise he ever welcomed. She was a sociologist, a woman of sharp intellect and a laugh that sounded like breaking glass. For three years, they had shared a small apartment in the 6th arrondissement, a space filled with books and the scent of Earl Grey tea.

The revelation came in the form of a blue folder, left open on the kitchen table. It was a study titled *The Architecture of Artificial Intimacy: A Longitudinal Study on the Manipulation of the Isolated Male*.

Marc read his own life in the third person. *Subject M. Response to simulated vulnerability: High. Attachment level: Absolute. Trigger for trust: Shared intellectual solitude.*

Every "chance" encounter, every shared secret, every moment of perceived vulnerability had been a calculated move in a social experiment. Sophie hadn't loved him; she had been observing him, recording his reactions like a biologist studying a specimen in a petri dish.

Marc did not scream. He did not throw the folder. He simply sat down and watched the clock on the wall. He felt a strange, clinical detachment, as if he were now the observer of his own collapse.

He didn't leave the apartment. Instead, he began to strip it. He removed the curtains, the rugs, the books. He turned the space into a white, empty cube. He wanted to see if he could find a version of himself that wasn't a reaction to Sophie's stimuli.

He spent weeks walking the streets of Paris, avoiding the places they had loved. He watched the crowds, wondering how many other people were merely the subjects of someone else's experiment. He began to find a perverse comfort in the idea that his pain was a data point.

One evening, Sophie returned, her face filled with a carefully constructed expression of regret. "Marc, I can explain," she began.

Marc looked at her, and for the first time, he saw her not as a lover or a betrayer, but as a set of variables. "You're late with the results, Sophie," he said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "I've already concluded the study. The result is zero."

He closed the door on her, not out of anger, but because she no longer fit into the geometry of his life.
