## The Rust Belt Prayer

The town of Oakhaven didn't die all at once; it eroded. First the mills closed, then the stores, and finally the hope. Frank was a part of that erosion, a man whose life was measured in the rhythmic thud of a stamping press for twenty years.

He had a plan. A small jar of cash hidden under the floorboards, a rusted 1984 Chevy, and Sarah. Sarah was the only thing in Oakhaven that still looked like it belonged in a magazine. He loved her with a desperate, clinging intensity, believing that if he could just get her across the state line, they could start over.

"Just a few more months, Sarah," he would whisper. "Then we leave this graveyard behind."

But Sarah had her own map. She didn't want a new start; she wanted a shortcut. The Mayor of Oakhaven, a man whose smile was as fake as the town's prosperity, had offered her a deal. A house in the hills, a wardrobe of silk, and a permanent escape—provided she could deliver the "nuisance" that Frank had become. Frank had started asking too many questions about the town's land-grab schemes, and the Mayor didn't like nuisances.

The trap was simple. A forged document, a staged crime, and a town that had already decided Frank was guilty. When the sheriff's deputies came for him, Sarah didn't cry. She stood on the porch, her eyes as cold as the November rain, watching them throw him into the back of the cruiser.

In the county jail, Frank tried to fight. He wrote letters to the governor, he shouted his innocence until his throat was raw, he tried to find a single ally among the guards. But Oakhaven was a closed loop. Every door he knocked on was locked from the inside.

He spent three years in a cell that smelled of bleach and failure. He stopped shouting. He stopped writing. He began to realize that he wasn't a man in the eyes of the law; he was just a piece of scrap metal, discarded by a system that had no use for him.

On the day of his parole, he walked out into the same gray light. He saw Sarah across the street, stepping into a black sedan, her jewelry glinting in the sun. He didn't call out to her. He just turned around and started walking back toward the ruins of the mill, a ghost returning to his haunt.
