The Burning of the Greenhouse

The ledger lived in the wall.

Grace found the loose brick in the third week, when she was prying up floorboards to look for anything she could trade for coffee—a privilege the reform center did not ordinarily provide. The brick came out with a dull thud, and behind it: a small cavity, dry and dark, and something wrapped in oilcloth.

Inside was a ledger. Bound in plain blue cloth, its pages filled with careful handwriting in ink that had faded to the color of weak tea. Grace opened it by the light of a stolen candle and began to read.

Every entry was the same format: name, age, commitment reason, date of admission, date of estimated release (most entries had no date here—just a dash, or nothing at all). But the details between those lines told the real story.

Margaret Doyle, 22. Committed for "excessive political discourse." Reason noted: "Spoke at labor rally in Union Square, criticized textile factory conditions."

Helen Park, 19. Committed for "moral deviation." Reason: "Found carrying literature supporting women's suffrage in private correspondence."

Sarah Kimball, 31. Committed for "emotional instability." Reason: "Refused husband's authority on three occasions, publicly."

Grace closed the ledger and pressed it back against the wall. Her hands were shaking.

This was not a reform center. It was an archive of silenced women.
