The Price of the Crown

The rain in Los Angeles didn't wash anything away; it just turned the dust into a grey sludge that mirrored the city's morality. I was Leo, a private eye with a penchant for cheap bourbon and a history of being the fall guy for people with better lawyers. I lived in a walk-up that smelled of old cigarettes and failed dreams.

My luck changed when I found the "Black Ledger." It was a small, leather-bound book containing the secret payoffs of every judge, police chief, and councilman in the city. It was the master key to the kingdom.

I didn't go to the press. I wasn't that stupid. Instead, I started a business of "consultation." I didn't blackmail people for money; I blackmailed them for power. I traded silence for favors, and favors for assets. Within three years, I had moved from the walk-up to a penthouse in the hills. I owned the docks, the clubs, and the men who ran them.

But power in LA is a hungry beast. To keep the crown, I had to become the thing I hated. When my old partner, a man who had saved my life in the war, came to me begging for help to save his daughter from a debt-collector, I didn't help him. I used the situation to tighten my grip on the debt-collection racket. I told myself it was "strategic."

By the time I became the undisputed king of the underground, the mirror stopped reflecting a man. It showed a predator. I had purged every trace of sentiment, every flicker of empathy, because empathy was a vulnerability that the city would exploit.

I sat in my leather chair, sipping a twenty-year-old scotch, listening to the city hum below me. I had everything. I had the money, the fear, and the absolute loyalty of a thousand broken men. But as I looked at the phone, knowing that no one in the world actually loved me—that they only feared the man with the ledger—I realized the trade had been a disaster.

I had bought the crown, but I had paid for it with my soul. And in the cold light of the LA moon, I found that the crown was made of lead.
