Tom Kelli's consciousness returned to the sleeping pod at 03:47 ship-time, and the first thing he noticed was that Emily Walker's vitals were still reading "normal."

The AI core—designated M-E-R-I-D-I-A-N in capital letters that glowed amber on the bulkhead—had run twelve diagnostics since Emily's heart rate dropped to zero. Every diagnostic returned identical results: all biological systems within operational parameters. Her brain activity showed theta-wave patterns consistent with deep meditation. Her cellular metabolism was stable. Her oxygen consumption was optimal.

She was dead. And the ship's computers insisted she was perfectly healthy.

Tom stood outside the pod with his hands in his pockets—the same posture he'd maintained for eleven years at the Brooklyn spaceport, the one that made Director Steele sigh and say, "Tom, I need you to do something. Anything. Just not stand there."

But Tom didn't stand there in space. Space was different. In a spaceport, standing there meant you were monitoring, observing, recording. Here, in the void between Mars and the outer belt, standing was the only response the universe seemed to invite.

He opened Emily's personal terminal. The last entry was timestamped six hours before her death:

> Entry 447. DSCF signal detected at coordinates 22.7, -14.3. Intensity increasing. Pattern is not random. It is responding to our presence. I think it knows we're coming. I think it has been waiting for someone to listen.

He read it again. "It has been waiting for someone to listen."

Tom understood listening. He understood it the way other people understood math or music. It wasn't a skill he'd developed; it was something that had developed him. Eleven years at the spaceport had taught him to read the subtle shifts in cargo traffic—the slight decrease in supply shipments that preceded a colony's resource crisis, the change in communication patterns that told him a station was preparing for evacuation. He hadn't learned to listen. Listening had learned him.

The terminal screen flickered. A new line of text appeared below Emily's entry, as if typed by invisible fingers:

> TO: T. KELLI > FROM: DSCF NODE 7 > MESSAGE: THE LISTENER HAS ARRIVED

Tom stared at the screen. The amber letters of the AI core seemed to pulse, and for a moment—just a moment—he felt something press against the inside of his skull. Not pain. Not thought. The space between them.

He closed the terminal. He did not report the message. He did not know why.

Behind him, in the sleeping pod, Emily Walker's chest rose and fell with the rhythm of someone who was not sleeping, not awake, but doing something else entirely. Something the ship's computers had no word for.
