The Coal-Dust Dirge (V-011: Appalachian Gothic Variation)

The mountains of West Virginia did not protect the people of Blackwood; they imprisoned them. The peaks were jagged teeth of slate and iron, and the valleys were filled with a fog that tasted of sulfur and old grief. In Blackwood, the only thing deeper than the mine shafts was the silence of the families who had lost their men to the earth.

Silas was the same as the others—a man of the mountain, with skin the color of coal and eyes that had seen too many cave-ins. But Silas had a "Sickness of the Soul." He could hear the voices of the dead, not as ghosts, but as echoes in the rock. He knew when a seam was about to buckle; he knew when a lamp was about to fail.

One winter, the voices told him about the "Vein of Glass"—a hidden deposit of crystal that could bend the flow of time. Silas spent months digging in secret, driven by a desperate need to save his brother, who had been trapped in the 1924 collapse.

When he finally touched the glass, the world shuddered. Silas found himself standing in the same mine, but the year was 1924. He saw his brother, young and terrified, huddled in a pocket of air.

For a month, Silas lived a double life. By day, he was a broken miner in the present; by night, he was a guardian in the past. He brought food, water, and hope to his brother, whispering through the rock walls about a future where the mines were closed and the mountains were green.

But the mountains of Appalachia do not like to be cheated. The "Vein of Glass" was not a gift; it was a lure. For every second Silas spent in the past, he was stealing time from the present. He noticed that the people of Blackwood were aging prematurely. Children were growing old in a matter of weeks; the forests were withering in a single afternoon.

The climax came when Silas tried to pull his brother through the glass portal into the present. As his brother's hand broke through the surface, the mountain let out a scream of tectonic rage. The portal didn't just close; it inverted.

The "Vein of Glass" shattered, and the stolen time rushed back all at once. In a single, violent heartbeat, the present and the past collided. Silas saw his brother age seventy years in a second, his skin turning to parchment, his eyes clouding over.

"You shouldn't have come back, Silas," his brother whispered, his voice a dry rattle. "The earth doesn't forget. It only collects."

The mine collapsed for the final time, burying Silas and the ghost of his brother under a million tons of slate. As the oxygen faded, Silas felt the cold weight of the mountain pressing down on him. He realized that in his attempt to erase a tragedy, he had only created a larger one. He had tried to fight the gravity of the mountains, and in the end, the mountains had won.
