The Mud Mirror

Leo didn't believe in rescue. In the rusted heart of the Rust Belt, where the factories stood like hollowed-out ribcages of a dead giant, rescue was just a word people used before they were cheated. He sat in the cab of his truck, the engine humming a low, defeated tune as the wheels spun uselessly in the grey slurry of the roadside.

He had been driving for twelve hours, transporting a shipment of cheap rye to a dive bar that didn't care where the alcohol came from as long as it burned. Now, he was stuck.

A car slowed down nearby. A man leaned out, his face a mask of practiced concern. "Need a tow, friend? I've got a winch in the back."

"Get lost," Leo spat, not even looking at him.

He didn't want a tow. He didn't want a friend. He wanted to solve this himself, to prove that he was the only variable in his own miserable equation. He climbed out of the truck, his boots sinking into the cold, clinging mud. He began to dig, not with a shovel, but with his bare hands, clawing at the earth with a ferocity that bordered on the psychotic.

As the hours passed, the mud began to change. In the reflection of the slurry, Leo didn't see a man; he saw a creature—a pale, bloated thing that looked like it had been born from the silt. He began to talk to it.

"You want me, don't you?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "You've been waiting for me to slip."

He started to negotiate. He promised the mud his silence, his memories, the very breath in his lungs, if only the truck would move an inch. He offered his dignity, then his regrets, then the memory of his mother's face. He was no longer trying to move a vehicle; he was trying to buy his way out of a spiritual debt he couldn't name.

By the time the sun dipped below the jagged horizon, Leo was lying flat on his back, half-submerged in the grey ooze. He looked up at the sky and laughed, a sound that was more of a choke. He realized that the truck wasn't the thing that was stuck. The truck was just a piece of metal.

He was the one who had been sinking for forty years, and the mud was simply the first thing honest enough to tell him where he actually was.
