The Cold Rain of Los Angeles

The city of Los Angeles is a lie wrapped in a neon sign. It promises you everything—fame, fortune, a new beginning—and then it charges you interest until you're bankrupt in every way that matters. I've spent fifteen years walking these streets, and all I've learned is that the only thing you can trust is the rain.

My name is Frank Miller. I'm a private investigator, which is a fancy way of saying I get paid to look at things people want to keep hidden. I live on a diet of cheap bourbon and cigarettes, and I sleep in an office that smells like old paper and regret.

The case started simply: a missing ledger. My client was a man named Sterling, a "philanthropist" who owned half the city's real estate and probably all of its judges. He wanted the ledger back before the DA could find it. I found the ledger, but I also found something else—the truth.

The ledger wasn't just about money. It was a directory of every payoff, every threat, and every murder Sterling had commissioned to build his empire. And the most sickening part? I was on the list. Not as a partner, but as a tool. Sterling had been paying my landlord, my doctor, and even my ex-wife to keep me in a state of controlled misery, ensuring I would always be desperate enough to do his dirty work.

I tried to go to the police, but the police were just another department of Sterling's empire. I tried to go to the press, but the papers were printed on Sterling's money.

I spent three days in a haze of paranoia, watching my reflection in every shop window, waiting for the black sedan to pull up. I realized that I had spent my life thinking I was the hunter, but I was just the hound on a very short leash.

On the fourth night, the rain came. It was a cold, biting rain that washed the grime off the sidewalks but left the city just as filthy. I walked down to the alley behind my office, the neon sign of a nearby diner flickering in a rhythmic, dying pulse.

I sat on a damp crate and lit one last cigarette. I looked at the revolver in my hand. There was no one left to call, no one to trust, and no way out that didn't involve a hole in the ground.

I didn't feel sad. I felt a strange, cold clarity. The world was a machine designed to grind people like me into dust, and I was simply tired of fighting the gears.

I closed my eyes, listened to the rain hitting the pavement, and pulled the trigger. The sound was small, a tiny pop in the vast, indifferent noise of the city.
