The Symmetry of Nothing

The apartment was white. The walls, the floor, the ceiling. Everything was a sterile, oppressive white. A lived in by a man named A.

A discovered the Shift.

The Shift was a thin membrane in the air of his hallway. On the other side was another apartment. It was identical in every detail—the same white walls, the same chipped coffee mug, the same beige sofa. The only difference was the resources.

In Apartment 1, there was water, but no electricity. In Apartment 2, there was electricity, but no water.

A began the transit.

He carried buckets of water from Apartment 1 to Apartment 2. He used the electricity of Apartment 2 to power a small pump that pushed the water into a tank. He spent his days moving back and forth, a human bridge between two halves of a whole.

He didn't think about the 'why.' He only thought about the 'how.'

Over ten years, A built a system. He installed pipes. He wired the walls. He created a closed-loop ecosystem where the water and the power flowed in a perfect, symbiotic circle. He turned the white void into a home. He bought a painting. He grew a single, stunted fern in a pot. He felt a quiet, humming sense of achievement.

He had conquered the asymmetry. He had created a perfect world out of two broken ones.

On the anniversary of the first Shift, A sat on his sofa and looked at his fern. He felt a rare surge of pride.

Then, the hum stopped.

The lights flickered and died. The water in the pipes ceased to flow.

A rushed to the hallway. He reached for the Shift, but there was no shimmering membrane. There was only a white wall.

He ran to the other side, but there was no other side.

The two apartments had synchronized. The universe had corrected the error. The resources had averaged out, and in the process, they had neutralized each other. The water had evaporated; the electricity had grounded.

A looked around his apartment. The painting had faded to white. The fern had turned to ash. The walls were once again a sterile, oppressive white.

He sat on the floor. He didn't cry. He didn't scream. He simply looked at his hands and wondered if he had ever actually moved at all, or if he had just been dreaming of a bridge.

He lay down on the white floor and waited for the white ceiling to swallow him.
