The Desire Broker

The rain in City A didn't wash anything away; it just polished the grime. I’m Elias, a private eye with a liver that’s seen better days and a conscience that’s been dead since the Great Crash. I don't look for missing persons anymore. I look for missing pieces of the soul.

I have a key to City B. City B is the Shadow—a mirror image of our concrete jungle where every repressed urge, every forbidden lust, and every buried talent takes a physical form. In the Shadow, a man’s greed isn't a feeling; it's a shimmering gold coin. A woman’s ambition is a razor-sharp blade.

I became the Broker.

A fat cat from the financial district wants the 'killer instinct' of a street fighter? I go to the Shadow, pluck the jagged red crystal of aggression from a brawler's chest, and graft it into the executive's psyche. A fading starlet wants the 'eternal youth' of a maiden? I trade her a decade of her memories for a handful of silver dew from the Shadow’s gardens.

The price was always the same: a piece of my own emotional spectrum. To move the cargo, I had to be a void. First, I lost the ability to feel fear. Then, the capacity for joy. By the time I had a penthouse overlooking the rain, I couldn't even remember what it felt like to love. I was a perfect machine, a ghost in a tailored suit.

Then came Clara.

Clara was the only thing in City A that didn't feel like a transaction. She was a cellist who played music that sounded like the first day of spring. I loved her with the last flickering ember of my humanity.

But the Shadow doesn't like voids. It wants to be filled.

One night, I woke up to find my key missing. I rushed to the Shadow and found Clara there. But she wasn't the woman I knew. She had become the 'Collector.' She had absorbed every fragment of desire I had ever traded. She was a kaleidoscope of a thousand different hungers, a goddess of greed with Clara’s eyes.

"You traded everything away, Elias," she whispered, her voice a chorus of a thousand stolen souls. "You thought you were the broker, but you were just the delivery boy. The Shadow doesn't take payments in gold. It takes them in essence."

She reached into my chest and pulled out the last ember—the love I had for her. It was a tiny, pale spark. She swallowed it with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

I walked back to City A. The rain was still falling. I looked at the gold, the penthouse, and the power, and I felt absolutely nothing. I wasn't sad. I wasn't angry. I was just empty.

I sat in my office, poured a double bourbon, and waited for the rain to finally drown me.
