The White Interval

There was no sky, no earth, and no wind. There was only the Interval—a boundless, blinding expanse of white that stretched in every direction. In the Interval, there was no time, only the presence of the fragments.

The Entity did not remember having a name. It did not remember the sensation of skin or the weight of a heart. It was simply a point of awareness, a flicker of consciousness in the void. Floating around the Entity were millions of shards of black glass, each one containing a fragment of a human life: a laugh, a regret, a single, piercing moment of clarity.

For an eternity, the Entity had been trying to build a 'Self.' It would reach out and pull two fragments together—perhaps a memory of a first kiss and a memory of a childhood home—and try to fuse them. For a few moments, the Entity would feel a surge of identity. It would feel the warmth of the sun and the smell of rain. It would believe, with a sudden, desperate intensity, that it was a man named Elias, or a woman named Sarah.

But the fusion was always unstable. The fragments were like magnets with the same pole; they would vibrate with a violent intensity and then shatter, sending the shards spinning back into the white.

"Why can I not be whole?" the Entity wondered.

It began to experiment with larger clusters. It tried to build a complex architecture of a life—a childhood, a career, a marriage, a death. It spent eons meticulously arranging the shards, creating a magnificent, fragile sculpture of a human existence. It was a masterpiece of simulated identity.

But the moment the final piece was placed, the sculpture collapsed. Not because of instability, but because of a fundamental truth: the fragments did not belong together. They were not pieces of a broken mirror; they were pieces of a thousand different mirrors.

The Entity stopped trying to build. It sat in the center of the white void and looked at the shards. It realized that the desire for 'wholeness' was the last remnant of a human delusion. The idea that a person is a single, coherent entity was a lie told by the living to make the chaos of existence bearable.

The truth was the fragment. The truth was the interval between the shards.

The Entity let go of the need to be 'someone.' It stopped trying to fuse the glass. Instead, it began to dance between the fragments, drifting from a moment of joy to a moment of agony, from a flash of anger to a whisper of peace. It didn't try to own the memories; it simply witnessed them.

In the absolute silence of the white void, the Entity found a strange, crystalline peace. It was no longer a broken person trying to be fixed; it was the space where all broken things could finally coexist without the pressure of becoming a whole. It was the silence between the notes, the white space between the letters, the perfect, eternal interval.
