The Mirror of Void

Berlin, 1990. The wall had fallen, but new walls were rising in the minds of the survivors. Julian Vane was a man of meticulous habits and deep anxieties. He lived in a small apartment in Kreuzberg, where he spent his days cataloging the sounds of the city. He was a collector of echoes, a man who believed that everything that ever happened left a sonic footprint.

Then the Silence fell. Not a lack of sound, but a predatory silence that ate noise. If you spoke too loudly, the Silence would tear a hole in the air and swallow the speaker. The city became a library of whispers, where a sneeze could be a death sentence.

Julian survived because he had always lived in silence. He padded his walls with egg cartons and wore velvet slippers. He communicated with the few remaining survivors through a complex system of hand signals and written notes.

He became the "Librarian of the Quiet." People came to him to learn how to move without sound, how to breathe without triggering the void. He lived in a state of constant, vibrating tension, his ears straining for the slightest hint of the predatory silence.

But Julian began to hear something that shouldn't exist: a voice. It was his own voice, but it was speaking from the future.

"You think you're safe in the quiet, Julian?" the voice whispered. "But the silence isn't outside. It's inside you."

Julian became obsessed. He started recording the silence, using high-sensitivity microphones to capture the gaps between the sounds. He discovered that the Silence was not a phenomenon, but a mirror. It didn't eat noise; it reflected the inner void of the person who created it.

The more Julian tried to avoid the Silence, the more he fed it. His fear became a beacon, a signal that drew the void closer. He began to see "echoes" of himself—versions of Julian who had failed, who had screamed, who had been swallowed.

He realized that the only way to survive was to embrace the noise. To scream into the void until the mirror shattered.

In a final, desperate act, Julian gathered all the survivors in the center of the city. He brought every bell, every whistle, every siren he had collected. He told them that the only way out was through a wall of sound.

As they began to play, the Silence roared back, a tidal wave of absence that threatened to erase them all. Julian stood at the center, screaming at the top of his lungs, a raw, guttural sound of pure existence.

For a moment, the mirror shattered. The silence broke. The world rushed back in a cacophony of color and noise.

But as the sound faded, Julian looked at his hands. They were translucent. He had screamed so hard that he had pushed himself through the mirror. He was now an echo, a sonic footprint of a man who had once existed.

He watched the survivors walk away, their voices loud and vibrant. He tried to call out to them, but all that came out was a faint, distant hum—the sound of a man who had finally found the perfect silence.
