The Mirror of the Abyss

The Castle of Valerius clung to the cliffs of the Adriatic like a parasite, its grey stone walls weeping salt and sorrow. Valentine, a nobleman of fading lineage, wandered the labyrinthine halls with a silver candelabra in his hand, the light flickering against portraits of ancestors whose eyes seemed to follow his every move.

He was searching for his wife, Isabella. She had vanished a month ago, leaving behind only a single, blood-stained ribbon and a lingering scent of jasmine. The servants whispered that the castle was alive, that it breathed and remembered, and that Isabella had been claimed by the "Hollows"—the echoes of the dead that haunted the lower vaults.

Valentine's search became an obsession. He mapped the castle's hidden passages, discovering rooms that defied geometry and staircases that led to nowhere. He began to experience vivid, terrifying visions: a room filled with mirrors, a single scream that lasted for hours, and the feeling of cold hands tightening around his throat.

"The castle only shows you what you are capable of seeing, Valentine," the castle's physician, Dr. Moretti, remarked. Moretti was a man of shadowed expressions and surgical precision.

The climax occurred in the highest tower, in a room known as the Chamber of Reflections. The walls were entirely mirrored, creating an infinite loop of Valentines, stretching into a digital-like void. In the center of the room stood Isabella.

But as Valentine reached for her, the mirror shifted. He saw the truth. Isabella wasn't missing; she was dead. He saw himself, in a fit of possessive madness, strangling the life out of her because he could not bear the thought of her looking at another man.

The "Hollows" were not ghosts; they were the fragments of his own shattered psyche, projecting his guilt into the architecture of the house. The "search" was a ritual of denial, a way to keep the horror at a distance by turning it into a mystery.

Valentine looked at the infinite reflections of himself. He saw the monster in every single one.

"I am the abyss," he whispered, the candelabra falling from his hand and shattering on the floor.

He did not leave the tower. He sat in the center of the mirrors, surrounded by a thousand versions of his own crime, and waited for the darkness to claim him. He found a strange, poetic peace in the realization that he was the only thing in the castle that was truly hollow.
