The Mirror of Echoes

The city of Ouroboros did not exist in space, but in a loop of perpetual twilight. Its streets were made of polished obsidian, and its buildings were towering spires of translucent bone. There was no sun, only a Great Eye in the zenith that blinked once every century.

Silas was a scavenger. In Ouroboros, the only currency was "Echoes"—crystalline fragments of memory left behind by those who had vanished. By consuming an Echo, Silas could gain the skills of a dead master, the strength of a fallen warrior, or the knowledge of a forgotten sage.

For eons, Silas had climbed. He had consumed thousands of Echoes, evolving from a trembling wretch into the apex predator of the city. He had become the Sovereign of Ouroboros, the only being capable of walking the Forbidden Path to the Center.

"The Exit is there," the Echoes had whispered in his mind. "Reach the Center, and you shall be free of the loop."

The path was a gauntlet of psychological torture. To advance, Silas had to hunt and consume the Echoes of the other "Ascendants"—the only other beings who had reached his level. He killed them one by one, their screams becoming part of his own voice, their memories blurring into his own. He felt a growing detachment, a coldness that turned his heart into a piece of obsidian.

Finally, he reached the Center. There stood a mirror, vast and shimmering, reflecting the entire city.

Silas stepped forward, expecting a portal to a new world. Instead, he saw a reflection that didn't mimic his movements. The reflection was a trembling, starving scavenger, eyes wide with terror.

"Who are you?" Silas demanded.

The reflection spoke, and the voice was Silas's own, but from a million years ago. "I am the first," the reflection whispered. "And you are the last."

In that moment, the Great Eye blinked.

The mirror shattered, and the truth flooded Silas's mind. There were no other Ascendants. There was only one Silas, fragmented across a billion timelines. Every "Echo" he had consumed was a version of himself that had failed. Every kill had been a suicide. Every step toward the exit had been a step deeper into his own psyche.

The "Sovereign" was not a title of power, but a diagnosis of complete isolation. He had reached the top of the mountain only to find that the mountain was a circle.

Silas looked at his hands. They were beginning to crystallize, turning into the very Echoes he had hunted. He felt his consciousness begin to fragment, splitting into a thousand new versions of himself, each one waking up at the edge of the city, feeling a strange, distant hunger for memories.

He screamed, but the sound was just another Echo, destined to be consumed by the next version of himself.
