The View from the Bottom

I remember the day the "Saviour" arrived in the Lower East Side. He didn't come in a limo; he came on foot, wearing a thrift-store suit and a smile that could sell ice to an Eskimo. He called himself Julian, and he told us that the skyscrapers of Midtown weren't buildings—they were monuments to our theft.

I was just a runner for the docks, a guy who knew which alleys to avoid and which palms to grease. I didn't believe in saviours, but Julian had a way of making you feel like you were the only person in the room. He didn't talk about "policy" or "reform"; he talked about *burning it all down*.

I became his shadow. I was the one who handled the "logistics"—the bribes, the intimidation, the midnight meetings in rain-slicked parking lots. I watched him rise. He started with a few hundred angry dockworkers and ended up with a million followers. He was a genius of the narrative. He knew exactly when to sound humble and when to sound like a god.

"We're not just changing the government, Leo," he told me one night, overlooking the city from a rooftop. "We're changing the nature of power."

The revolution was fast and bloody. The "Gods" of the corporate boardrooms didn't stand a chance against a million people who had nothing left to lose. Julian didn't just take their money; he took their names, their titles, and their lives. He built a new order, a "People's Republic of the City."

But the view from the bottom doesn't change just because the man at the top does.

Six months into the new regime, I was sent to "process" a group of students who had questioned the new rationing laws. As I stood in the cold basement of the new Ministry of Truth, I saw Julian. He was sitting in a chair made of reclaimed mahogany, wearing a suit that cost more than my childhood home. He wasn't talking about "the people" anymore; he was talking about "stability" and "necessary sacrifices."

He looked at me, and for a second, I saw the man from the Lower East Side. Then he blinked, and the mask was back.

"Do it, Leo," he said, his voice devoid of the old passion. "The city needs to learn that the new order is just as absolute as the old one."

I did it. I did it because I was still a runner, and I still knew how to follow orders. As I walked out into the grey New York rain, I realized that Julian hadn't destroyed the skyscrapers. He had just moved into the penthouse.
