The Last Inquisitor

(Epic Narrative Style)

The empire of Aethelgard was not falling; it was evaporating. The great spires of the capital were crumbling into the sea, and the laws that had governed a thousand years were now nothing more than ink on rotting parchment. I was the Last Inquisitor, the final guardian of the Imperial Truth, tasked with the purity of the state.

My final assignment was the prisoner in the Iron Tower. He was a man of no name, a shadow of a person who had been captured at the border of the Waste. He was accused of the ultimate heresy: the claim that the Empire had never existed, that we were all merely ghosts in a dying dream.

For months, I interrogated him. I used every tool of the Inquisition—the psychological pressure, the sensory deprivation, the slow unraveling of the mind. I sought a confession, a sign of weakness, a crack in his armor of indifference.

"You are a ghost, Inquisitor," he would say, his voice a dry rattle. "You are the most devoted servant of a lie. Do you not feel the wind blowing through your ribs?"

I laughed at his madness. I was the law. I was the truth.

But as the city outside the tower began to burn, as the screams of the dying reached the highest parapets, I began to see the cracks. I found a record in the Imperial Archives—a ledger of souls. In it, I found my own name, listed not as a citizen, but as a 'Construct of Order', created three hundred years ago to maintain the illusion of the state.

The prisoner was not a heretic. He was my predecessor.

He had been the Inquisitor before me, and before him, there had been others. Each of us was created, given a set of memories and a fierce loyalty to a dead empire, and then tasked with hunting down the ones who had finally woken up.

The "truth" I had spent my life defending was a cage made of gold and blood. The Empire was a corpse, and we were the maggots keeping it from rotting.

I looked at the prisoner. He smiled, a look of profound compassion.

"Welcome to the waking world," he whispered.

I did not arrest him. I did not execute him. I walked to the balcony of the Iron Tower and looked out at the burning world. I felt the weight of three centuries of lies collapsing upon me. I was not a hero. I was not a guardian. I was a tool that had finally broken.

I stepped off the ledge, not as a servant of the Empire, but as a man who had finally found the courage to cease existing.
