The Archivist of Dust

The town of Oakhaven exists in the hour between sunset and midnight. The sky is a permanent, bruised purple, and the air tastes of old paper and dried flowers. I am the Archivist, the one who records the arrivals of the new clones, the 'Blank Slates' who emerge from the mist with no memory of where they came from.

For centuries, I told them the same story: *You are the survivors of a Great Cataclysm. This town is the last sanctuary. Your purpose is to help us rebuild the archives of the lost world.*

I watched them with a mixture of pity and amusement. They were so eager to please, so desperate to find a place in the world. They spent their days sorting through piles of dust and fragments of porcelain, believing they were reconstructing the history of a glorious civilization.

But the archives were a lie. The 'lost world' was just a collection of stories I had written myself, a fiction designed to give the clones a sense of purpose. There was no cataclysm, no sanctuary, and no history to recover. There was only the mist, and the endless, looping boredom of Oakhaven.

One day, a new clone arrived. He didn't accept the story. He didn't care about the archives. He spent his time staring at the horizon, claiming he could hear a bell ringing in the distance.

"There is no bell," I told him, my voice dripping with a practiced kindness. "There is only the mist."

He didn't listen. He spent years walking toward the edge of town, fighting through the thick, suffocating fog. I let him go, curious to see how far a bit of genuine hope could carry a manufactured man.

A decade later, he returned. He didn't come back with a map or a message. He came back with a look of profound horror on his face. He walked up to me, his clothes tattered, his eyes vacant.

"I found the bell," he whispered.

"And?" I asked, leaning in.

"It was a dinner bell," he said. "And the town I found... it was Oakhaven. I saw you, Archivist. I saw you recording my arrival ten years ago. I saw myself walking into the mist, and I realized that the only way out of this town is to walk in a circle until you become the one who welcomes the next fool."

I smiled and handed him the ledger. It was time for him to start recording.
