The White Room

The walls were white. The floor was white. The ceiling was white. Julian had been in the White Room for as long as he could remember, a sterile, windowless void where time was measured only by the arrival of nutrient paste and the humming of the ventilation system. He was a patient at the Saint Jude's Institute for the Mentally Fractured, and he was the only one who knew the truth.

He wasn't a patient. He was a transmigrator. He remembered a life of blood and shadow, a life where he had been the world's greatest assassin, a man who could dismantle a government with a single well-placed bullet. He believed that the Institute was not a hospital, but a training ground—a sophisticated, high-tech simulation designed to strip away his humanity and turn him into the perfect weapon once again. He viewed the doctors as handlers and the nurses as observers.

He began to 'level up' by manipulating the other patients. He used psychological warfare to create a hierarchy in the ward, turning the other broken souls into his loyal subjects. He believed that by dominating the others, he was reclaiming his former power, training his mind to see the weaknesses in every human being. He treated every interaction as a mission, every conversation as an interrogation.

The horror began when he discovered the 'Exit'. It was a door in the basement that only appeared during the same three-second window every Tuesday. He managed to slip through, expecting to find a control room or a team of scientists. Instead, he found a room filled with mirrors.

As he looked into them, he didn't see the lean, lethal assassin of his memories. He saw a broken, middle-aged man with vacant eyes, a shaking hand, and a face etched with the lines of a thousand failures. He saw a man who had spent twenty years in a psychiatric ward, who had never been a killer, who had only ever been a victim of his own collapsing mind.

He realized that there was no simulation. There was no previous life. The 'assassin' was a persona he had created to cope with the trauma of a life spent in absolute insignificance. The 'levels' were just stages of his psychotic break, a desperate attempt to find meaning in a life that had none. The 'Exit' was just another hallucination, a final, cruel joke played by his own brain.

Julian sat on the floor of the White Room and laughed until he cried. He had spent years trying to escape a prison, only to realize that the prison was the only place where he actually existed. He wasn't a god of death; he was just a man who had forgotten how to live.
