The Root of the Radiance

The humidity in Oakhaven didn't just hang in the air; it felt like a wet blanket soaked in old blood and jasmine. The plantation house, once a monument to the wealth of the cotton kings, now leaned precariously to the left, its white pillars peeling like dead skin.

Silas sat on the porch, watching the Spanish moss sway in the stagnant breeze. In his lap lay the Ledger of the Sun, a book bound in something that felt uncomfortably like human skin. The "Divine Light" was a family legacy in Oakhaven, but it wasn't a gift. It was a parasite.

Every generation, one son was chosen to carry the Light. They were called the Protectors, the Saints of the Soil. They could heal the sick and command the weather, but the cost was always the same: the Light fed on the family's sanity.

Silas's father had reached the Third Tier before he started talking to the walls. His grandfather had reached the Fifth before he tried to "purify" the entire county by burning every living thing in sight.

"I'm different," Silas whispered, though he didn't believe it.

He began the meditations, the geometric patterns that shifted the air around him into a shimmering haze. As he ascended, the world around him began to change. The decay of the house didn't disappear; it became beautiful. The rotting wood looked like intricate lace; the mold on the walls formed celestial maps.

But the visions came with a price. He started seeing the "Shadow-Kin"—the distorted remnants of all the previous Protectors, tethered to the house by invisible cords of light. They didn't speak; they just watched him with hollow eyes, their mouths open in silent, eternal screams.

One night, Silas reached the Sixth Tier. The Light erupted from his chest, a blinding white flare that illuminated the entire swamp for miles. In that moment, he saw the truth. The Light wasn't coming from a divine source; it was being pumped up from the ground, fed by the centuries of suffering and death buried beneath the plantation's soil.

The "Saints" were just filters, turning the agony of the past into a sterile, usable power.

Silas looked at his glowing hands and felt a sudden, violent urge to tear them off. He wasn't a protector; he was a scavenger, living off the ghosts of a thousand tragedies. He tried to stop the meditation, but the Light wouldn't let go. It had found a new host, and it was hungry.
