The Bureau of Finality

Mr. Henderson was a man of exquisite order. His ties were always perfectly knotted, his pencils always sharpened to a lethal point, and his filing cabinets were organized by a system of alphanumeric codes that would make a librarian weep with joy. He worked for the Department of Existential Management (DEM), a windowless office in the heart of Manhattan where the air smelled of ozone and old coffee.

Henderson's job was simple: he processed "Civilization Termination Requests."

Most of the requests were routine. A planet's core collapsed; a sun went supernova; a species accidentally turned themselves into sentient soup. Henderson would simply stamp the form "APPROVED," file it in the 'Void' drawer, and move on to the next case.

Then came the file for Sector 7-G, a small, noisy planet called Earth.

The request hadn't come from the humans, of course. It had come from a higher authority—a cosmic auditor who had found the Earth's existence to be "statistically offensive." The auditor's note was brief: *Too much noise, insufficient symmetry. Please flatten.*

Henderson sighed. He hated dealing with "noise" planets. They always complained. He spent three weeks drafting the formal notification, ensuring that the font was a professional Times New Roman and the margins were exactly one inch. He sent the notice via a subspace courier, expecting the usual flurry of panicked appeals.

Instead, the humans responded with a 400-page document arguing that their "jazz music" and "sarcastic humor" constituted a unique cultural contribution to the universe.

"Preposterous," Henderson muttered, stamping the document 'DENIED' with a satisfying thud. "Jazz is not a valid reason for continued three-dimensional existence."

The day of the termination arrived on a Tuesday. Henderson was in the middle of a particularly tedious meeting regarding the procurement of new staplers when the "Flattening" occurred.

There was no alarm. There was no dramatic countdown. There was simply a sudden, awkward shift in the room's geometry.

Henderson looked up and saw his boss, Mr. Gable, suddenly slide sideways. Gable didn't fall; he simply became a thin, vertical strip of a man, his face stretched into a long, absurd line of surprise. The mahogany conference table followed, turning into a shimmering rectangle of brown ink on the carpet.

Henderson looked at his own hands. They were becoming translucent, then flat. He felt a strange sense of professional satisfaction. The process was incredibly efficient. No mess, no screams, just a clean, mathematical transition from volume to area.

As he was pressed against the wall, becoming a permanent, two-dimensional portrait of a middle-manager, Henderson's last thought was a flicker of annoyance.

*I forgot to file the final report for Sector 7-G.*

The office was now a silent, flat gallery. The files, the desks, and the bureaucrats were all perfectly aligned, a masterpiece of administrative symmetry. The universe was finally orderly.
