(Tragic Romantic Style)

The empire of Aethelgard was not falling; it was evaporating. The borders were leaking, the cities were starving, and the air was thick with the scent of burning libraries. It was a world where the only thing more plentiful than the ruins was the despair.

General Valerius had been a ghost for a decade, exiled to the frozen wastes of the north for a crime of conscience. He had watched from afar as the empire he loved was dismantled by a succession of madmen and opportunists. He had not forgotten the smell of the imperial gardens or the sound of the silver bells in the capital.

His return was a storm. Valerius had not come alone; he had forged an alliance with the barbarian tribes of the waste, men who fought not for gold, but for the promise of a world where the law was simple and the truth was absolute. They swept through the provinces like a scythe, clearing the path to the Eternal City.

The battle for the capital was short and brutal. Valerius entered the throne room not as a conqueror, but as a mourner. He found the current emperor—a trembling boy of twelve—cowering behind a curtain of gold silk. Valerius did not kill him; he simply took the crown and placed it on his own head.

For one hour, Valerius was the most powerful man in the world.

But as he looked out from the balcony of the palace, he saw the cost of his victory. The city was in flames. The alliance he had built had turned into a mob, and the "liberation" had become a massacre. The libraries were burning, the aqueducts were broken, and the last remnants of the empire's culture were being trampled into the mud.

He had reclaimed the throne, but there was no longer a kingdom to rule. He was the emperor of a cemetery.

Valerius walked through the streets of his capital, his armor stained with the blood of the people he had come to save. He saw a woman clutching a handful of scorched parchment—a poem from the old world—and he realized that his return had been the final blow. By bringing the barbarians to the gates to save the crown, he had destroyed the very thing that made the crown worth wearing.

He returned to the palace and sat on the throne, the cold gold pressing against his brow. He did not call for a council; he did not issue a decree. He simply sat in the silence, listening to the distant screams of a dying civilization.

He had won the war, but he had lost the world. Valerius closed his eyes and imagined the empire as it had been—vibrant, proud, and alive. He realized that the only way to truly save Aethelgard was to let it die, and he was the one who had delivered the final, merciful stroke.
