The Gilded Parasite

Leo lived in the cracks of New York. He was a man of the periphery, a ghost who slept in subway tunnels and ate the discarded remnants of a city that viewed him as a smudge on the landscape. He was invisible, until the day he started seeing the "Weight."

The Weight was a shimmering, oily shadow that clung to every person. It was the manifestation of their hidden greed, their secret shames, and their deepest hungers. And Leo discovered that if he touched the Weight, he could steer it.

He started small. A nudge here, a whisper there. He manipulated a landlord into giving him a penthouse apartment; he steered a hedge fund manager into a series of "lucky" trades that made Leo a silent partner. Within two years, Leo had ascended from the tunnels to the penthouses. He wore silk suits that cost more than his childhood home and drank wine that tasted of ancient sunlight.

He believed he had hacked the system. He believed he was the master of the shadows.

But the Weight was not a tool; it was a lure.

As Leo's wealth and power grew, he noticed a strange sensation in his chest—a cold, hollow void that could never be filled. He began to crave the Weight of others more intensely, not to manipulate it, but to consume it. He became a social predator, hosting lavish parties just so he could feast on the subconscious desperation of the city's elite.

He didn't notice that his own shadow was changing. It was no longer a reflection of his body; it was becoming a separate entity, a bloated, undulating mass of obsidian that followed him like a loyal, hungry dog.

On the night of his thirtieth birthday, Leo stood at the edge of his infinity pool, looking out over the glittering expanse of Manhattan. He felt a sudden, sharp pinch in his spine.

The shadow beneath him surged. In a single, violent motion, the entity he had fed for years rose up and wrapped itself around him. It didn't kill him; it absorbed him.

Leo felt his consciousness being compressed, folded, and tucked away into a small, dark corner of the entity's mind. He watched from a distance as his own body—now a perfect, hollow shell—turned back to the party guests with a smile that didn't reach the eyes.

The entity spoke using Leo's voice, but the tone was ancient and cold. *Thank you for the cultivation, Leo. You were a magnificent vessel.*

The man who had climbed from the tunnels to the penthouse was gone. In his place was a parasite that had finally grown large enough to eat its host. Leo remained as a flickering spark of awareness, a passenger in his own skin, forced to watch as the thing that wore his face began to hunt for a larger city to consume.
