The Signal of the Fallen

The war did not end with a bang, but with a signal.

General Valerius stood on the bridge of the *Iron Aegis*, the last dreadnought of the Terran Hegemony. Around him, the void was littered with the husks of a thousand ships. The Devourer had not just won; it had erased the very idea of victory.

Valerius was a man of scars and silence. He had led the defense of the Orion Belt, the Siege of Titan, and the final, desperate stand at the edge of the solar system. He had seen his soldiers turned into dust and his worlds turned into fuel.

"The lunar impact is a failure, sir," the tactical officer reported, his voice hollow. "The entity shifted its phase. The moon passed through it like a ghost. We have nothing left."

Valerius looked at the holographic map of the galaxy. For centuries, humanity had fought in isolation, believing they were the only ones brave enough to stand against the dark. They had treated the Devourer as a local plague, a monster to be slain.

But as he watched the Devourer prepare for its final strike, Valerius realized the truth. The entity wasn't a monster; it was a bell.

The lunar impact, though it had failed to destroy the Devourer, had created a gravitational ripple of unprecedented magnitude. It was a scream in the fabric of space-time, a signal that could be felt across a hundred light-years.

"It wasn't a weapon," Valerius whispered. "It was a flare."

Across the void, in the hidden folds of the Andromeda void and the crystalline cities of the Pleiades, other civilizations—ancient, terrified, and hiding—felt the ripple. They had spent eons in silence, believing they were the last survivors of a dead universe. Now, they knew there was someone else. They knew there was a species that had dared to strike a god, even if they had failed.

Valerius ordered the *Iron Aegis* to charge its final capacitors. He didn't aim for the Devourer. Instead, he aimed for the heart of the signal, amplifying the ripple one last time.

"We are not saving ourselves," Valerius told his crew. "We are waking up the neighbors."

The ship exploded in a flash of light that outshone the sun. The *Iron Aegis* was gone, and with it, the last of the Terran military. But the signal persisted, a golden thread of defiance stretching across the cosmos.

A thousand years later, the Devourer was hunted down and dismantled by a coalition of twelve different species, all of whom had found each other because of a single, failed moon-crash from a dead world called Earth.
