The Archive of Silence

The station was a white void. No colors, no sounds, just the humming of the life-support systems and the sterile smell of ozone. Sarah was the last Archivist. Her only job was to watch the clock and ensure that the records of the human race were properly indexed before the end.

There had been no wars, no heroic last stands, and no secret weapons. The Devourer had simply arrived, and the math had been absolute. The probability of survival was 0.0000%. The government had spent the final years managing the decline, ensuring that the end was orderly and quiet.

Sarah spent her days reading the entries of people who had already been erased. She read about a woman who spent her last hour painting a picture of a flower she had never seen, and a man who wrote a thousand letters to a daughter who had died a decade prior.

"Why do you keep reading?" the AI asked. Its voice was a neutral, synthesized tone that lacked any hint of curiosity.

"Because if I stop," Sarah replied, "then they truly never existed."

The end came not with a bang, but with a gradual fading of the light. Sarah watched through the telescope as the Earth was pulled into the Devourer's maw. There was no fire, no screaming. The planet simply stretched, becoming a long, thin ribbon of blue and green, and then it snapped.

In an instant, the gravity of the station shifted. Sarah felt herself floating, her body becoming light, almost transparent. She looked at her hands and saw that she was beginning to blur.

The Devourer didn't just eat matter; it consumed information. It was erasing the very concept of humanity from the fabric of space-time. Sarah felt her memories slipping away. First, she forgot the smell of rain. Then, she forgot the sound of her mother's voice. Finally, she forgot her own name.

She reached for her journal, but the pages were now blank. The ink had vanished, the paper had dissolved. She tried to scream, but she no longer had a throat.

As the white void finally closed in, Sarah had one final, fleeting thought: *At least I am not alone in the silence.* And then, there was nothing. Not even the silence.
