The Voltage Conspiracy

The rain in London is a permanent fixture, a grey drizzle that turns the city into a watercolor painting left out in a storm. I’m Detective Miller, and I specialize in the kind of cases that make the Yard uncomfortable—the ones where the laws of physics take a holiday.

My current headache was a series of "Clean Rooms." That's what the press called them. A victim found in a sealed apartment, no sign of struggle, just a pile of silver ash on the carpet and a lingering smell of ozone.

I had a hunch it wasn't a natural phenomenon. Natural ball lightning is rare; a string of ten "accidents" in three weeks is a pattern.

I started digging into the victims. All of them had one thing in common: they had all been employees of Aether-Corp, a private energy firm that claimed to be developing "wireless power transmission."

I tracked my lead to a dive bar in Southwark, where I met a whistleblower named Leo. He was shaking, his eyes darting toward the door every few seconds.

"They've figured it out, Miller," he whispered, his voice trembling. "They aren't just capturing the spheres; they're directing them. They've turned a natural anomaly into a precision tool for assassination. No fingerprints, no weapon, just a puff of ash."

"Who's running the show?" I asked, lighting a cigarette.

"My brother," Leo said, a tear rolling down his cheek. "He was the lead physicist. He thought he was saving the world, but he just built a better way to kill people."

I spent the next forty-eight hours dodging Aether-Corp's "security teams"—men in grey suits who moved with a mechanical precision. I finally broke into the facility's main lab, a cavern of steel and humming capacitors.

In the center of the room was a device that looked like a giant, metallic eye. And inside the eye was a sphere of pulsating crimson, held in place by a web of magnetic fields. It looked like a trapped god, screaming in a frequency only the desperate could hear.

I found the brother, Julian, standing at the console. He didn't look like a killer; he looked like a man who had seen the end of the world and decided to move in.

"You can't stop it, Miller," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "The power is too great. Once the signal is sent, the spheres will deploy. We can erase any one person, any one building, any one truth."

I didn't have time for a monologue. I pulled my .38 and shot the primary capacitor. The explosion was instantaneous. The magnetic field collapsed, and the crimson sphere, finally free, didn't hesitate. It didn't go for me. It went for Julian.

He didn't even scream. He just vanished in a flash of white light, leaving behind a pile of ash and a lingering scent of ozone.

I walked out of the building as it burned behind me. I had stopped the conspiracy, but I knew the spheres were still out there, drifting in the rain, waiting for the next signal.
