The Comedy of Errors in Red

New York was a city of a million coincidences, and for Leo and Max, the biggest coincidence of all was the death of their father. He had been a small-time accountant who had accidentally discovered a discrepancy in the books of a major real estate mogul, Marcus Thorne. Thorne had "fixed" the problem with a single, well-placed bribe to a corrupt police officer and a "tragic" house fire.

Leo and Max didn't want a grand tragedy. They wanted a precise, mathematical revenge. They spent three years studying Thorne's habits, his weaknesses, and his absurd obsession with perfection.

The plan was a masterpiece of absurdity. They didn't use assassins; they used a series of meticulously timed inconveniences. A misplaced file here, a sudden power outage there, a lapped-up coffee on a million-dollar contract. They turned Thorne's life into a glitchy simulation.

The climax occurred during Thorne's 60th birthday gala, an event designed to showcase his absolute control over the city. The brothers had spent months infiltrating the staff.

As Thorne stood on the podium to give his speech, the giant screen behind him, intended to show a montage of his achievements, suddenly flickered. Instead of the corporate success story, it began to play a loop of Thorne's private recordings—him admitting to the murder of their father, laughing about the "little accountant" who thought he could play with the big boys.

The room went silent. Thorne looked at the screen, then at the crowd. He tried to laugh it off, to call it a prank, but the laughter didn't come. Instead, there was a sudden, violent surge in the building's electrical system—a "glitch" Max had engineered.

A massive chandelier, a symbol of Thorne's opulence, suddenly detached from the ceiling. It didn't fall with a dramatic crash; it descended slowly, almost gracefully, before snapping and pinning Thorne to the floor in a tangle of crystal and gold.

He wasn't killed instantly. He lay there, trapped under the weight of his own luxury, while the guests looked on with a mixture of horror and amusement.

Leo and Max stood at the back of the room, sipping champagne. They didn't feel the weight of the world on their shoulders. They felt a light, airy sense of irony.

"You know," Max whispered, "the timing was off by three seconds."

"Details," Leo replied. "The punchline was perfect."
