The Neon Void

Los Angeles was a city of electric rain and synthetic dreams. Mike and Tom were brothers of the badge, detectives in a precinct that was bought and paid for by the Syndicate. They lived in the grey space between the law and the gutter, chasing shadows in a world where the truth was just another commodity.

Their father had been the only honest cop in the city. For that, he had been erased—a "tragic accident" involving a faulty brake line and a steep cliff.

The target was Julian Vane, the architect of the city's corruption. Vane didn't live in a house; he lived in a spire of glass and chrome that touched the smog-filled clouds. He was a man who believed that everything, including loyalty, had a price.

The brothers spent years climbing the ladder, infiltrating Vane's inner circle, becoming the very things they hated. They traded their morals for access, their souls for proximity. By the time they reached the top, they were no longer the boys who had cried at their father's funeral. They were cold, efficient predators.

The night of the execution was a masterpiece of timing. They trapped Vane in his penthouse, the city lights twinkling below like a million fallen stars.

"Why?" Vane asked, his voice smooth and devoid of fear. "You could have had millions. You could have been kings."

"We just wanted the truth," Mike replied, his voice a dead monotone.

Vane laughed, a dry, hacking sound. "The truth? Your father wasn't a saint, Mike. He was a gambler. He owed the Syndicate half a million. I didn't kill him because he was honest; I killed him because he was a liability. He was just as dirty as the rest of us."

Vane slid a file across the table—bank statements, photos, a history of a man who had betrayed everything he claimed to stand for.

The world tilted. The revenge that had been the only pillar of their lives for twenty years suddenly collapsed. The "truth" they had sought was a mirror reflecting their own ugliness.

Mike looked at the gun in his hand. He didn't feel justice. He felt a void, a vast, neon-lit emptiness that swallowed everything. He pulled the trigger, not to punish Vane, but to stop the noise in his head.

As the sirens wailed in the distance, Tom sat in the dark, staring at the file. They had killed the man who killed their father, but in doing so, they had murdered the memory of the only thing they ever loved.
