The Logic of the Void

The facility was a masterpiece of clinical efficiency, a labyrinth of white corridors and reinforced glass. We were the "Optimized," children selected for their cognitive potential and stripped of their emotional baggage. We were taught that empathy was a biological glitch, a remnant of a primitive past that hindered the progress of the species. Our lives were governed by the Algorithm, a system that calculated the optimal path for every action.

The experiment entered its final phase when the resources were capped at 50% of the required caloric intake. The Algorithm did not suggest a lottery or a ration plan. Instead, it issued a directive: "Eliminate the Inefficient."

The process was devoid of passion. There were no screams, no tears, no dramatic betrayals. We simply looked at each other and saw data points. We calculated the metabolic rate, the cognitive output, and the strategic value of every peer. The first "elimination" was a mathematical certainty; the child with the lowest cognitive score was removed from the group with the same indifference one might use to delete a corrupted file.

I became the most efficient operator in the facility. I didn't kill because I hated, or because I was hungry; I killed because it was the only logical response to the environment. I optimized my movements, my sleep cycles, and my strikes. I viewed my peers not as humans, but as obstacles to the goal of survival. The Algorithm praised my precision, rewarding me with extra calories that I used to further increase my efficiency.

When I was the final survivor, the glass walls of the facility finally slid open. I stepped out into a world of blinding light, expecting to be crowned as the pinnacle of human evolution. Instead, I found a room full of scientists with clipboards. One of them looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and disgust.

"Subject 14 has achieved total emotional erasure," he noted. "The transition from human to tool is complete."

I looked at the scientist and felt nothing. No joy, no fear, no relief. I only wondered if his metabolic rate was high enough to justify his continued existence. As I stepped toward him, I realized that the Algorithm had not just taught me how to survive; it had erased the very reason for surviving. I was the perfect survivor, and in that perfection, I was completely dead.
