The city of Aethelgard was a skeleton of white marble and blackened iron, its great libraries now nothing more than wind-swept tombs. Above, the sky was a permanent shade of bruised violet, the sun a pale, dying ember that provided light but no warmth.

High atop the Spire of Lament, two figures met. General Kaelen of the Northern Hegemony and Archon Valerius of the Southern Reach. They were the last two pillars of a world that had forgotten how to stand.

Between them sat a table of obsidian, upon which rested a single, silver bowl of water and two cups of bitter tea.

"The borders are gone, Valerius," Kaelen said, his voice like grinding stones. "The wastes have swallowed the valleys. Your cities are ghosts, and my armies are starving. Why have you called me here?"

Valerius looked out over the ruins of the capital. "To discuss the definition of a conqueror. For three centuries, our houses fought over the salt mines and the silk roads. We called ourselves heroes. We called our massacres 'liberation'."

"And now?" Kaelen asked.

"And now we are the kings of ashes," Valerius replied. "The true hero is not the one who builds the empire, but the one who knows when to let it die with dignity."

Kaelen narrowed his eyes. "You speak of surrender."

"I speak of survival," Valerius countered. "There is a valley in the far west, a place where the soil still breathes. We can fight for the last scrap of land and ensure that neither of us survives to see the spring, or we can merge our remaining strength and lead our people into the twilight together."

Kaelen felt the weight of a thousand dead soldiers on his shoulders. He looked at the Archon—a man he had hated for a lifetime—and saw not an enemy, but a mirror. They were both relics of a dead age, clinging to titles that no longer meant anything to the wind.

"The history books will call us traitors to our own legacies," Kaelen whispered.

"Let them," Valerius said, raising his cup. "The dead do not read history. Only the living do."

They drank in silence, two broken men forging a desperate alliance in the shadow of a falling world, their personal hatred eclipsed by the overwhelming scale of their shared extinction.
