The Mirror in the Cellar

The Blackwood Manor sat like a rotting tooth in the middle of the Georgia pines, draped in Spanish moss that looked like the grey hair of a drowned giant. I had been in the cellar for as long as I could remember. The walls were weeping saltpeter, and the only sound was the distant, rhythmic thumping of the Great Clock upstairs.

My master was a Great Ape of immense girth and terrifying stillness. He didn't speak much, but he didn't have to. His presence was a weight that pressed the air out of my lungs. He treated me with a strange, suffocating kindness, bringing me fine silks and exotic fruits, but he never let me see the sun.

"You are the last of the Pure," he would whisper, his voice a low rumble that shook the floorboards. "The world outside is a carnival of madness. Here, you are preserved. Here, you are sacred."

But the kindness was a mask for a deeper, more sinister project. Every Tuesday, the Master would bring a mirror into the cellar—a massive, ornate thing with a frame of carved bone. He would force me to stand before it and describe what I saw.

"Tell me, Elias," he would say. "Do you see the soul of a man, or the reflection of a beast?"

At first, I saw a man. A pale, trembling man with hollow eyes. But as the years passed, the mirror began to change. Or perhaps I did. I started seeing things in the glass that weren't in the room—shadows of a city that burned in a fire of gold, voices that screamed in a language I almost understood.

The Master began to tell me stories about my "origin." He claimed that I was not born, but crafted—a biological mimicry designed to study the extinct human psyche. He said my memories of a mother and a father were merely "pre-installed narratives" to give the experiment emotional depth.

I began to doubt the very texture of my skin. When I touched my face, it felt like wax. When I bled, the blood looked too red, too perfect.

One night, the Master left the mirror uncovered. I crept toward it, my heart hammering. I didn't look at my face; I looked at the background. In the reflection, I saw the cellar door open, and I saw the Master standing behind me. But in the mirror, he wasn't an ape. He was a man—a withered, ancient man with the same hollow eyes as mine.

He smiled, and the reflection of the man smiled back.

"Now you see," the voice whispered, though the Master's lips didn't move. "The mirror doesn't show what we are. It shows what we are pretending to be."
