The Museum of False Light

The city of Sub-Londinium was a cathedral of rust and dampness, a sprawling network of sewers and forgotten vaults beneath the cobblestones of the surface. Here, the air was a thick soup of methane and coal-smoke, and the only light came from the flickering, greenish glow of bioluminescent fungi.

Thomas was a scavenger. He lived in the "Silt-District," where humans were kept as biological batteries, their neural energy harvested by the Great Engine to power the opulent palaces of the Surface-Dwellers—the evolved Simians who had claimed the world above.

Thomas was obsessed with the "Light." He had found a small, cracked piece of a mirror and a single, faded photograph of a sunflower. To him, these were holy relics. He spent his nights organizing the other scavengers, whispering of a world where the sky was a color called "blue" and the air didn't taste of copper and decay.

"The surface is a paradise," he would tell them, his voice a fevered rasp. "We are the rightful heirs to the sun. We only need to climb."

The climb took three months. They ascended through the ventilation shafts, fighting through nests of blind rats and the crushing pressure of the deep earth. Thomas led them with a religious fervor, his eyes wide with a desperate, starving hope.

When they finally breached the last iron grate, they didn't find a paradise.

They emerged into a vast, sterile hall of white marble and glass. The light was blinding, but it was cold. As their eyes adjusted, they saw that they were standing in the center of a massive exhibit. Around them, behind thick walls of reinforced crystal, were other humans—frozen in poses of domestic bliss, dressed in lace and velvet, their eyes vacant and glazed.

A sign in elegant, gilded script read: *THE HUMAN ERA: A Study in Primitive Sentimentality. Exhibit 42: The Instinct of Hope.*

A group of Simian tourists, dressed in top hats and morning coats, stopped to look at them. One of them pointed a gloved finger at Thomas and chuckled.

"Look at this one," the Simian remarked, his voice echoing in the sterile hall. "It actually thinks it escaped. How quaint. The 'Hope-Circuit' is still functioning perfectly in this specimen."

Thomas looked at the sunflower photograph in his hand. In the harsh, artificial light of the museum, the yellow petals looked like a bruise. He realized that his rebellion had been the final piece of the exhibit.
