The Market Value of Iris

In the glass towers of Manhattan, people were not measured by their character, but by their utility. Iris was the ultimate utility. Born with a rare genetic mutation that allowed her to perceive market volatility as a visual spectrum of colors, she was the most valuable asset in the city.

She had been "raised" by Marcus, a disgraced former executive who had found her as an infant and kept her hidden in a penthouse apartment, treating her as a secret oracle. For years, Marcus used Iris to build a shadow empire, but as she grew, the "scent" of her ability leaked into the financial world.

The "courtships" began. They were not romantic; they were hostile takeovers. The CEOs of the Big Three firms competed to marry Iris, each offering a dowry that could buy a small country. They didn't want her heart; they wanted her eyes. They wanted to integrate her perception into their algorithmic trading systems.

Iris, however, had learned the game. She realized that her value was based entirely on her scarcity. She played the three firms against each other, leaking false "color" signals to trigger market crashes and surges, effectively becoming the puppet master of the New York Stock Exchange.

But the game had a cost. The more she manipulated the market, the more she realized that the "colors" she saw were not predictions, but reflections of human greed. She was not seeing the future; she was seeing the collective hunger of a million desperate people.

The climax came during the "Black Friday" of the century. Iris had orchestrated a collapse that would have made her the richest person on Earth. But as she stood in her penthouse, looking at the chaos in the streets below, she felt a sudden, piercing disgust.

"I am not a tool," she whispered.

Using the very chaos she had created, Iris executed a final, untraceable transaction. She transferred every cent of her wealth into a series of dead-end accounts and triggered a legal "death" for herself—a complex series of identity erasures that made her a non-person in the eyes of the state.

She walked out of the tower, stripped of her jewelry and her power, and disappeared into the crowd of the subway. She was no longer a "Market Value." She was just a girl in a gray coat, and for the first time, the world looked colorless and beautiful.
