The Living Gallery

The castle of Schloss-Vane sat atop a jagged cliff in the Black Forest, a monolith of grey stone and weeping ivy. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of lilies and formaldehyde.

Adrian had been brought to the castle in a velvet-lined crate, a gift for the collectors.

The collectors—the Von Hagens—were a couple of such exquisite depravity that they viewed the world as a series of objects to be curated. They did not see Adrian as a boy, but as a "Study in Youthful Innocence."

They dressed him in lace collars and silk stockings. They fed him honeyed cakes and read him the poetry of Keats and Shelley. They brushed his hair with silver combs and bathed him in scented oils. To any observer, it was a paradise of luxury and care.

But the care came with a price: the Price of Stillness.

"A masterpiece does not move, Adrian," Mr. Von Hagen would whisper, his breath smelling of peppermint and decay. "A masterpiece does not speak. It simply is."

For hours every day, Adrian was required to stand on a pedestal in the Great Gallery, perfectly still, while the Von Hagens admired him. If he blinked, if he shivered, if he so much as breathed too deeply, the tenderness vanished. He was not beaten; instead, he was ignored. He was cast into a cold, dark room for a day, denied the warmth and the poetry that had become his only lifeline.

He began to love the stillness. He began to crave the moments when he felt himself becoming an object, because in that state, the pain of his captivity vanished. He became a living statue, a piece of porcelain in a house of stone.

The end came when a rival collector attempted to steal him.

The resulting struggle was a blur of gunfire and shattered glass. In the chaos, the Great Gallery was set ablaze. Adrian stood on his pedestal, watching the flames lick the edges of the paintings, smelling the burning lace of his collar.

He didn't move. He didn't scream. He simply waited for the fire to reach him, his expression one of serene, terrifying peace.

He was rescued at the last second by a group of villagers, his skin blistered and his clothes charred. As they carried him away from the ruins of Schloss-Vane, Adrian looked back at the collapsing towers and felt a sudden, violent surge of grief.

He had been saved from the fire, but he had been robbed of his pedestal.

He spent the rest of his life in a small village, working as a gardener. But every now and then, he would stop in the middle of the street and stand perfectly still, closing his eyes and imagining the scent of lilies and the cold, loving gaze of the collectors.
