The Verdant Tomb

The greenhouse was a cathedral of glass and iron, a relic of a forgotten era of botanical obsession. Sebastian, the last scion of the House of Valerius, had spent his life within its walls, surrounded by plants that should not exist—carnivorous orchids from the depths of the Amazon, glowing ferns from the caves of Asia, and vines that seemed to pulse with a slow, rhythmic heartbeat.

Sebastian had been trapped in the greenhouse after a sudden collapse of the estate's main wing. The glass was reinforced, the locks were rusted, and the world outside had long since forgotten the Valerius name. He survived by eating the nutrient-rich nectar of the giant lilies and drinking the dew that collected on the broad leaves of the monsteras.

But the plants were not merely providing for him; they were studying him. Sebastian began to notice that the vines were moving when he wasn't looking, weaving themselves into intricate patterns around his bed. He found small, green tendrils beginning to sprout from his own skin, weaving into his veins like emerald threads.

He felt a strange, intoxicating euphoria. The pain of his isolation was replaced by a deep, humming connection to the greenery. He could feel the thirst of the orchids, the slow growth of the moss, the ancient memory of the soil. He was no longer a man; he was becoming a node in a vast, botanical network.

He spent his days in a state of half-sleep, his consciousness expanding. He saw the world not as a place of cities and people, but as a struggle for light and water. He began to despise the idea of rescue. Why would he want to return to the cold, sterile world of humans when he could be the heart of a living paradise?

One day, a rescue party finally broke through the glass. They found Sebastian lying in the center of the greenhouse, completely entwined in a web of iridescent vines. His skin was a pale, translucent green, and flowers were blooming from his chest and fingertips.

They tried to pull him free, but the plants reacted with a violent, protective fury, lashing out with thorns that dripped with a sweet, paralytic poison. Sebastian looked at them with eyes that were now gold and slit-pupiled. He didn't speak; he simply smiled, a slow, floral expression of contentment.

As the rescuers retreated in terror, Sebastian closed his eyes and felt the roots of the world wrap around his heart, pulling him down into the warm, dark earth.
