The Pawn of Neon Street

The rain in the city didn't wash anything away; it just smeared the neon lights into oily puddles on the pavement. I was a fixer, the kind of guy who finds things that don't want to be found. I've spent my life in the gutters of this town, learning that the only thing cheaper than a promise is a human life. When the call came about the Golden Sovereign, I thought it was just another score, a little bit of gold to get me out of the rain and into a place where the air doesn't taste like exhaust and desperation.

But in this town, a "score" is just another word for a death sentence. I wasn't the hunter; I was the bait. I woke up in a room that smelled of stale cigarettes and cheap gin, handcuffed to a chair that had seen too many broken men. Across from me sat Vane, a man whose smile had too many teeth and not enough soul. Vane was a power broker, the kind of man who bought and sold secrets like they were stocks. He had the map to the Sovereign, but he needed a "pure" soul to open the vault—a technicality of the ancient security system that required a specific biological frequency.

I wasn't pure, but I was desperate. Vane promised me a way out of the city, a clean slate, and enough credits to disappear to some island where the sun actually shines. He told me it would be easy. Just walk in, touch the sensor, and walk out. He didn't mention that the "pure" soul requirement was actually a requirement for a sacrifice.

The vault was a cold, sterile chamber of gold and chrome, hidden beneath the ruins of an old opera house. As I placed my hand on the sensor, I felt the Sovereign's consciousness slide into mine. It wasn't a spirit; it was a sentient algorithm of greed, a digital ghost that had consumed every thought of avarice since the dawn of time. It showed me Vane's real plan: the moment the vault opened, the security system would incinerate the "key." I was the key.

As the gold doors groaned open, I looked at Vane. He didn't even look back; he was already staring at the hoard, his eyes wide with a hunger that no amount of gold could satisfy. I didn't fight it. I just leaned back and watched the gold turn into fire, wondering if the credits were worth the heat. I closed my eyes and thought of the rain, the only thing in this city that was actually free.
