The Bastion of Lost Things

The borderlands of the 19th century were a place of mud and blood. Marc had been left in the ruins of a village burned by the Imperial Army, a child of the wreckage. He was found by a deserter named Kael, a man who had seen too many empires fall to believe in any of them.

Kael did not teach Marc how to be a son; he taught him how to be a survivor. He taught him how to read the wind, how to move through the brush without a sound, and how to find the weakness in any fortification.

"The world is a machine that eats children, Marc," Kael would say, cleaning his rifle by the fire. "Your only choice is to become the grit in the gears."

As Marc grew, he became a symbol. He didn't just fight for a piece of land; he fought for the "Discarded." He organized the orphans of the war, the widows of the purge, and the broken men of the trenches into a disciplined force. He built a community in the mountains—a sanctuary where no one was a mistake and every scar was a badge of honor.

He became a legend, the "General of the Lost." But the more he built, the more the Empire feared him. He was no longer just a rebel; he was a proof of concept—that a society could be built on empathy rather than bloodlines.

The final act took place at the Siege of Valerius. Marc led his army not to conquer the city, but to open its gates to the refugees. He knew the cost. He knew that the Imperial Guard would not negotiate with a "bastard."

In the center of the square, under a rain of iron and fire, Marc stood his ground. He didn't use a sword; he held a banner that listed the names of every child the Empire had abandoned.

He was shot through the chest just as the gates opened. As he lay in the mud, he felt a strange, overwhelming peace. He saw his people flowing into the city, not as conquerors, but as citizens.

He died with a smile on his face, knowing that while he had been born as a discarded thing, he had died as the foundation of a new world.
