The Echoes of Blackwood Manor

The humidity of the Mississippi Delta doesn't just hang in the air; it tastes of rot and old secrets. I am Silas, the last scion of the Blackwood line, living in a house that is more fungus than architecture. Blackwood Manor is a skeletal remains of a dynasty, its corridors smelling of damp wool and forgotten grief.

I found them in the cellar, buried beneath a layer of grey ash: four wax cylinders, the same kind used in the earliest days of phonography.

I had a hand-cranked player, a relic of my grandfather's obsession. When I lowered the needle onto the first cylinder, I didn't hear music. I heard a voice—my great-grandfather's voice—whispering a confession about a land deal in 1890 that had left three families destitute and one man dead in the swamp.

The voice was vivid, the terror in it almost tactile.

Driven by a morbid curiosity, I played the second cylinder. This one was a recording of a woman screaming, followed by the sound of a heavy door locking. It was my great-aunt, the one the family history claimed had "gone to a convent in France." The recording revealed the truth: she had been locked in the attic for twenty years to hide a scandal of madness.

The house began to feel smaller. The shadows in the corners seemed to pulse in time with the recordings.

By the third cylinder, the voices were no longer just recordings. I began to hear them in the walls. I would wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of a phantom needle scratching against a wax disc, echoing through the vents. The house was remembering its crimes, and it wanted me to remember them too.

The fourth cylinder was different. It was silent for three minutes, then a voice spoke—my own voice, but older, tired, and broken.

"Don't play the fourth one, Silas," the recording said. "The cost of the truth is the silence of the living."

I stared at the cylinder. I had already played it.

As the recording ended, the cellar door slammed shut. The lights flickered and died. In the absolute darkness, I heard the sound of a thousand needles dropping onto a thousand discs. The voices of the Blackwood dead rose in a cacophony of grief and rage, their echoes filling the room until there was no space left for me to breathe.

I am still in the cellar. I can hear the needle scratching. I am becoming part of the recording.
