The Neon Void

Los Angeles, 1947. The city was a sprawling concrete jungle where the sun only served to highlight the filth in the gutters. Vivian worked as a private investigator, known in the underworld as 'Vince,' a man of few words and a lethal efficiency with a .38 Special.

She had spent three years in this skin, hunting for the man who had erased her father from existence. The masculine facade was her armor; it allowed her to walk into the smoke-filled bars and gambling dens where a woman would be nothing more than a target.

Then she met Julian, a wealthy banker with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. He had hired her to find a set of stolen bonds, but as the weeks passed, the professional relationship devolved into something that felt dangerously like love. For the first time, Vivian allowed herself to imagine a life where she didn't have to hide.

"You're different from the other men in this city, Vince," Julian had whispered, his hand resting on her shoulder. "You have a soul that hasn't been bought yet."

The illusion shattered on a rainy Tuesday in November. Vivian had finally tracked the bonds to a warehouse in San Pedro, only to find Julian waiting for her. He wasn't the victim of a theft; he was the architect of it.

"You were so easy to manipulate, Vivian," he said, his voice devoid of the warmth she had trusted. "A girl playing dress-up, so desperate for a father that she didn't notice she was being used as a decoy."

Julian had known her secret from the start. He had orchestrated her father's disappearance to lure her in, using her as a proxy to move the stolen assets without attracting the attention of the federal agents. He had played the role of the lover to ensure her loyalty.

As the police sirens approached, Julian left her tied to a chair in the middle of the warehouse, surrounded by the evidence of a crime she hadn't committed. Vivian didn't scream. She didn't beg. She simply watched the neon lights of the city flicker in the distance, realizing that in the city of angels, the only thing more dangerous than a lie is the belief that someone is telling you the truth.
