Gunshot in the Cold Rain

I.

Los Angeles, 1947. Rain on the neon lights. The city was a broken mirror, every puddle reflecting a different lie. I sat in my office drinking whiskey and watching the rain blur the signs across the street. The bottle was cheap, the office was smaller, and the cases were fewer than they used to be.

The door opened. She walked in like trouble wearing a black raincoat. Veronica Hastings. Thirty years old, heiress to Hastings Chemical, beautiful in the way that gets people killed.

She put an envelope on my desk. Thick enough to keep me drinking for a year.

"Go to the desert," she said. "Someone told me something's wrong out there."

I did not ask why. I took the money and went.

In the desert, I found a gray fog shrouding a cotton field like a shroud. Something moved in it. Not wind. I approached and saw a donkey frozen in the fog—alive, eyes open, body rigid as stone. I took photos. My hands shook. Not from fear. From recognition. I had seen this in the Pacific. Japanese chemical weapons. The same thing.

II.

I showed the photos to Veronica. Her face changed—not fear, anger. She knew what they meant.

Hastings Chemical. Her father. Experimenting in the desert. Weapon-level experiments that did not end when the war ended.

I went to military archives. Hastings produced similar agents for the military. They continued after the war. For "progress." For "profit."

I found my old comrade, now a detective. Three people had died from "accidents." All who worked on Hastings projects.

"They are covering something up," he said. "Or protecting something."

I did not know the difference.

III.

Veronica came back. She had had enough.

"My father is not making weapons," she said. "He is making new life. An organic substance born from waste. But the experiment went wrong. The fog is spreading."

We went to the laboratory together. We found the truth: the chemical agents had combined in the desert, forming something organic, something that grew. It was not life, at least not life I understood. But it moved. It devoured. It froze.

Hastings found us. He stood in the doorway with a gun.

"Do you understand this world, Guan?" he said. "It does not belong to the good or the bad. It belongs to those who have the power to create monsters. And we are precisely such people."

I did not answer. Veronica held a silver dagger—her mother's heirloom. She charged.

A gunshot rang out.

IV.

The fog was contained in a silver net. Hastings went to prison for other things. Veronica left for Europe.

I sat in my office, watching Los Angeles through the rain. I lit a cigarette. I wrote in my diary:

"They will try again. And next time, they might create a monster that cannot be killed."

I closed the diary. Drank whiskey. The rain kept falling. Los Angeles kept operating. Nobody cared about the fog in the desert. Nobody cared about the dead.

This is this city's way.
