The Facility

I.

Wade Collins found the facility at dusk. It was a low, wide building, mostly underground, with a corrugated steel roof and a single door that hung open on rusted hinges. The sign above the door read MONTANA MINERAL PROCESSING — AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. The paint had faded to a pale gray.

His truck had broken down three miles back. The nearest cell tower was in the next valley. He had walked for an hour, following a dirt road that wound through sagebrush and black rock, when he saw the building. He pushed the door open. Inside, the air was cool and smelled of dust and machine oil.

The floors were concrete, cracked in places, with rust stains running like rivers across the surface. Machines lined the walls — crushers, separators, conveyor belts — all still, all covered in a thick layer of dust. He found a room with a desk and a chair. He sat. He took off his boots. He waited for morning.

He did not notice the motion sensor in the corner. He did not notice the red light blink. He did not hear the hum of the backup generators kicking on.

II.

The facility began its protocol. It was not malicious. It was not aware. It simply ran its program.

Cycle One: Intrusion Detection. The motion sensors tripped. The cameras rotated. The speakers activated. A voice — flat, mechanical, unchanged since 1984 — said: UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL DETECTED. PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF.

Wade looked up from the chair. He stared at the speaker. He said nothing.

Cycle Two: Identification. The cameras scanned him. Thermal imaging. Facial recognition — outdated software from the 1980s. The system concluded: SUBJECT MATCHES RECORD — W. COLLINS, FORMER EMPLOYEE, CLEARANCE LEVEL: MINIMAL.

Wade heard the voice again: IDENTITY CONFIRMED. THREAT ASSESSMENT INITIATED. He shrugged. He had been called worse by foremen.

Cycle Three: Threat Assessment. The facility ran a series of tests. It measured his heart rate — elevated. It measured his body temperature — normal. It measured the weight of his boots — heavy. It measured the weight of his belt — leather, with a steel buckle. It measured the weight of his hands — calloused, scarred. It compiled the data. It reached a conclusion: SUBJECT POSSESSES POTENTIAL THREAT CAPABILITY. RECOMMENDATION: DETENTION.

Wade heard: PLEASE REMAIN WHERE YOU ARE. SECURITY PROTOCOLS ARE IN EFFECT. He laughed. A short, dry laugh. He had been detained by worse things — bar fights, traffic stops, his ex-wife.

The facility locked the doors. Not with force. With bureaucracy. The electronic locks engaged with a series of clicks and thuds. The lights shifted from warm white to cold blue. The speakers said: FACILITY LOCKDOWN INITIATED. ALL PERSONNEL REMAIN IN DESIGNATED AREA.

Wade stood up. He walked to the door. It did not open. He walked to the window. It was reinforced glass, thick and opaque. He walked back to the desk. He sat down. He waited.

III.

Hours passed. The facility continued its assessment. It cycled through its protocols. Intrusion. Identification. Threat. Detention. Review. Repeat.

Wade did not fight it. He was sixty-three years old. He had spent forty years living alone in a trailer on the edge of the mining district. He had learned the art of waiting. Waiting for rain. Waiting for the mineral prices to go up. Waiting for his ex-wife to stop calling. Waiting for the silence to stop being so loud.

At three in the morning, the facility did something unexpected. It opened the door. Not all of them. Just one. The one Wade came in through. The speaker said: ASSESSMENT COMPLETE. YOU MAY LEAVE.

Wade looked at the door. He looked at the speaker. He said nothing. He walked out.

IV.

Wade walked home in the dark. The air was cold. The stars were bright. He could see his trailer in the distance, a small rectangle of yellow light against the black hills.

He walked. He did not think about the facility. He did not think about the protocols or the assessments or the locks. He thought about his truck, three miles back, sitting in the dust with its hood up and its engine cold. He thought about the morning. He thought about walking back to get it.

He reached his trailer. He opened the door. He turned on the light. He sat in the chair by the window. He waited for morning.

Outside, the facility hummed. The sensors reset. The cameras rotated back to their resting positions. The generators ran. The protocol waited. It will be ready for the next person. It has forty more years to wait. It is patient.
