The Rot of Blackwood Manor

The oaks of Blackwood Manor did not grow; they loomed, their twisted branches clawing at the oppressive grey sky of the Mississippi Delta. Silas Thorne sat on the wide, decaying veranda, watching the fog roll in from the swamp. To the town of Oakhaven, Silas was the patriarch, the benevolent lord of the valley who had rebuilt the local economy after the Great War. He was the man who provided jobs, who funded the church, and who spoke with a voice of calm, inherited authority.

But the manor had a memory, and its memory was blood.

The story of Silas's success was a carefully constructed myth. The town believed he had inherited the land and turned it into a paradise through hard work and vision. The truth was buried in the cellar, beneath the limestone floors and the smell of damp earth.

Thirty years ago, Silas had been a lieutenant in a desperate, starving army. He had a best friend, Elias, a man of pure heart and naive loyalty. Together, they had discovered a hidden cache of gold and land deeds left behind by a fleeing colonial family. It was enough to change their lives forever.

But greed is a parasite that feeds on friendship.

In a night of rain and madness, Silas had betrayed Elias. He hadn't just stolen the gold; he had framed Elias for a crime he didn't commit, ensuring that his friend would spend the rest of his life in a federal prison, forgotten and broken. Silas had used the blood-money to buy the manor, the land, and the loyalty of the town.

As the years passed, the guilt didn't fade; it fermented. The manor began to reflect the state of Silas's mind. The wallpaper peeled like dead skin; the corridors seemed to stretch and warp; the air grew thick with the scent of jasmine and decay. Silas became obsessed with the idea of "purification," spending his fortunes on elaborate rituals and architectural additions that served no purpose other than to hide the cellar.

He began to hear Elias's voice in the wind, a low, rhythmic chanting that echoed through the halls at midnight. He saw the ghost of his betrayal in every mirror—not as a specter, but as a version of himself that was rotting from the inside out.

The end came during the Great Flood of 1927. As the river breached the levees and the swamp reclaimed the valley, the water surged into the cellar, churning up the secrets Silas had spent a lifetime burying. The limestone floor collapsed, and the skeletal remains of the man he had betrayed were thrust upward, emerging from the mud like a final, silent accusation.

Silas didn't run. He sat on his veranda, watching the water rise around his ankles. He felt a strange sense of relief. The lie was over. The manor was sinking, and as the dark water finally claimed him, Silas Thorne realized that the only thing he had truly owned was the debt he owed to the dead.
