The Echo of a Ghost

Los Angeles was a city built on lies, and the rain was the only thing that tried to wash them away. It didn't work. The grime just settled deeper into the concrete. I sat in my office, the neon sign from the liquor store across the street blinking a rhythmic, sickly pink across my desk. I was Miles, a private eye with a liver that hated me and a memory that wouldn't let me sleep.

I had been hired to find a boy. The client was a ghost—a letter from a dead man’s estate, claiming a nephew had been lost in the sprawl. I didn't care about the money, but I cared about the hunt. The hunt was the only thing that kept the shakes away.

I followed the trail through the dive bars of Bunker Hill and the derelict piers of Santa Monica. Every lead was a dead end; every witness was a liar. But as I dug deeper, the city started to warp. I would walk into a diner and see a man who looked exactly like me, thirty years younger, sitting in the corner. I would hear a voice on the phone—a woman’s voice, soft and pleading—that sounded exactly like the wife I had let slip through my fingers a lifetime ago.

I started to think the city was talking to me. Or maybe the bourbon was finally winning.

I found the boy in a dilapidated boarding house in East LA. He was small, pale, and had eyes that looked like they had seen the end of the world. He didn't know who I was, but he knew my name.

"You've been here before, Miles," he whispered.

I froze. I had never been to this neighborhood in my life. But as I looked at the wallpaper, the peeling floral patterns began to shift. They became the walls of a hospital ward. I smelled the ozone of a crashing car. I heard the scream of a child.

The realization hit me like a blackjack to the skull. There was no nephew. There was no client.

The "boy" was a mirror. He was the manifestation of the child I had been before the war, before the failures, before I became the hollowed-out shell sitting in a pink-lit office. The "hunt" was a psychological loop, a recursive nightmare my mind had constructed to avoid the simple, crushing truth: I was the one who was lost.

I reached out to touch the boy's shoulder, but my hand passed through him like smoke. He wasn't a person; he was a memory of a possibility.

"Go away," I told the ghost.

"I can't," the boy replied. "You're the one who keeps calling me."

I walked out of the boarding house and into the rain. I didn't go back to the office. I walked until my shoes were soaked and my lungs burned. I stopped at the edge of the pier and looked out at the black Pacific. The city behind me continued to blink its neon lies, but for the first time in years, the noise stopped.

I didn't find the boy. I didn't find the money. I just found the bottom of the bottle and the end of the line. I lit a cigarette, watched the smoke vanish into the grey, and waited for the rain to finally take me too.
