The Secret of Space City

She stood on the white porch holding a cup of coffee, watching the rocket launch pad in the distance. Her eyes were the colour of a Houston sky—blue but empty. I was fourteen, mowing the lawn in Space City, Houston, Texas, in the summer of 1967.

"Those need trimming," she said, nodding at the hedges. "If you let them grow too thick, they hide things."

I trimmed them. Every week for the rest of the summer, I trimmed them.

Her name was Elizabeth Morrison. She lived in a white house on a white street, with a perfectly trimmed lawn and a husband named Dr. Jack Morrison, a ground engineer for the Apollo program. He worked on the life support system for the command module. "He stays on Earth," she said, "but he goes to space anyway. Through blueprints."

I came back every week. I listened to her talk about Apollo like it was a religion.

One afternoon, she went to Dallas and asked me to collect the mail. I stood in her study with the envelopes in my hands, and then I opened the drawer. Inside was Jack's engineer uniform, an Apollo program badge, and a stack of letters—letters to Congress about a design flaw in the life support system.

I closed the drawer. I collected the mail. I told her nothing.

In autumn, she told me she was pregnant. Jack had frozen sperm after the Apollo 1 fire. "He said if he didn't come back, let the child live. Let our child live among the stars." She put her hand on her stomach.

In January, Apollo 1 caught fire. Three astronauts died. I saw it on Elizabeth's television. She sat on the sofa, motionless. "It wasn't an accident," she said.

I helped her sort through things. I found Jack's letters from months before his death—he had discovered a design flaw in the life support system. Someone had tried to cover it up. He wrote to Congress. He wrote to the NASA administrator. No one responded. Then he died—an "accident."

Elizabeth didn't tell me the truth. She moved out of Space City. But I saw Apollo 7 launch on the news—the improved command module, the new life support system. I thought of Elizabeth's eyes.

Ten years later, I became an aerospace engineer at NASA. I never uncovered that secret. But every time I see a rocket go up, I think of that woman's eyes—blue as the Houston sky, empty as space.
