The Sacrifice of the Lily

The village of Saint-Cloud was a place of cobblestones and terror. It was 1793, and the guillotine in the square was the only clock that mattered. The sisters lived in a small cottage on the edge of town, their lives a desperate exercise in invisibility.

When Lucie arrived, she was a beam of light in a world of grey. She was their half-sister, a girl of innocence and laughter who didn't understand why the neighbors looked at her with suspicion.

"Why is everyone so afraid?" Lucie asked, her eyes wide with wonder.

The sisters knew. Lucie's father had been a secret advisor to the monarchy, a man of the "old world." In the eyes of the Revolutionary Tribunal, Lucie was not a child; she was the seed of aristocracy, a biological crime.

The sisters spent their days protecting her. They hid her in the cellar during raids; they burned her dresses to remove any trace of luxury; they taught her to speak the language of the proletariat. They loved her with a fierce, protective passion that bordered on the religious.

But the Tribunal was a machine that never stopped grinding.

A neighbor, driven by a mix of jealousy and fear, denounced Lucie. The soldiers arrived at dawn, their boots thundering on the cobblestones.

"Where is the girl?" the captain demanded, his sword drawn.

The sisters didn't hesitate. In a final, coordinated act of love, they created a diversion. Sarah and Emily led the soldiers toward the woods, claiming they had seen Lucie flee toward the border. They ran through the thorns and the mud, drawing the soldiers away from the cottage.

Mia stayed behind, helping Lucie climb through a secret hatch into the sewers.

"Run, Lucie," Mia whispered, kissing her forehead. "Run and never look back. Live for all of us."

Lucie escaped, disappearing into the mist of the morning. But the diversion failed. The soldiers realized the trick and captured the three sisters.

They were marched to the square in chains. As they climbed the steps of the scaffold, they didn't scream or beg. They looked at each other and smiled.

"She is safe," Sarah whispered.

The blade fell three times. The crowd cheered, believing they had purged another remnant of the old world. But as the blood soaked into the cobblestones, the sisters died with a peace that the revolutionaries could never understand. They had traded their lives for a single spark of hope, and in that sacrifice, they had found a nobility that no empire could ever grant.
